Low Carbon
Low Carbon Holidays at Braddon Cottages
The carbon emissions resulting from taking their holiday
must concern environmentally conscious visitors. Braddon Cottages
now can otter unique holidays (not to be found elsewhere) which
result in the very minimum production of carbon dioxide. You do
not have far to travel because Braddon is conveniently located in
southwest UK.. which is very accessible by public transport, we
offer a limousine service connecting to local buses during your
stay here, and most important of all, the main energy to the cottages
is supplied from a sustainable non-fossil fuel energy source.
Newly commissioned, the Braddon Cottages central heating and domestic
hot water systems are served by underground heat mains, insulated
hot water pipes to each building from a hi-tech Austrian woodchip
boiler in a shed in the North Ride area of Braddon. The woodchips
are harvested locally or from the Braddon forest using small sizes
and low quality wood not otherwise of commercial value. However,
this system had a high capital cost which is our contribution (and
yours via your low carbon holiday) towards a solution to the worldwide
problem of global warming caused by burning fossil fuels. Answering
a query we often get about wood energy usage, the carbon in wood
was sequestered from the atmosphere as the trees grew less than
fifty years ago: whereas the carbon in gas, oil and coal was sequestered
millions of years ago releasing hitherto buried fossil carbon (as
CO2), which is already destabilizing the climate. However, if you
must come in that beautiful Chelsea Tractor, we have lots of parking
space and your holiday will still be much greener than most!
Our six seater vehicle will by appointment collect on arrival and
deliver on departure your party and luggage from Holsworthv Library
bus stop. These buses originate at Exeter Coach Station and stop
at Exeter St Davids train station (with frequent trains from London
stations and the North), running express on the motorway, taking
about one hour to Holsworthy, a pleasant ride through our green
countryside, six busses a day (two on Sunday) from 9.40 am to 8.30
pm. Thereafter, it will be possible for you to make day trips using
local bus services to Barnstaple Centre, Bideford Quay, Great Torrington,
Bude on the coast, Exeter and Plymouth Centres, and many other scenic
places in our beautiful county of Devonshire. Your visit here by
public transport will of course have to be carefully planned. You
can do this yourself by consulting the national public transport
websites www.traveline.org.uk,
tel 0871 200 22 33 and www.nationalrail.co.uk.
If you do not use computers, please tell us the nearest train or
national bus station to your home and what trips you would like
to make from Braddon. We will make up and send you a complete itinerary
for your visit. These local buses all travel through our beautiful
green countrtside stopping at picturesque villages with excellent
pubs and other visitor attractions. Travelling by bus you will never
have to worry about being breathalysed ! We can also offer a taxi
service (for six persons) to local visitor attractions at a fixed
charge of £l0 per hour plus mileage at 30p per mile. Concerning
food shopping, our local supermarket, which is SOMERFIELDS, will
deliver here to Braddon Cottages (minimum order £25).
Also, much of our water comes from the Braddon well and borehole.
The houses are equipped with low energy electric cookers and light
bulbs. Our effluent runs to a natural reedbed with no outlet to
a watercourse.
